Finding the right help – what are you looking for:
A Nanny
A Nanny is usually a qualified NNEB (Nursery Examination Board - 2 year training course) or
equivalent. Shorter courses taken by girls at training college are acceptable as long as their c.v.
shows plenty of ‘on the job’ experience.
A nanny will typically take sole charge of the children and tasks related to their well being e.g.
washing and dressing them, feeding them, potty training, school pick ups and drop offs, arranging
and attending medical appointments etc. You may also require them to perform light housework. At
the heart of what a nanny should focus on is the care and development of the child and in this
respect, the nanny should provide a range of activities suitable to the child’s age both inside and
outside of the home environment.
A Mother’s Help
A Mother's Help is not a qualified Nanny. Their duties typically are to assist the mother with the
children and generally help around the house e.g. vacuuming, dusting, preparing meals, laundry,
ironing etc. They may be asked to take sole charge of the children and may be expected to drive.
Mother’s Helps could be in the course of working towards or having completed a childcare course
and may have had prior practical experience.
A Housekeeper
A Housekeeper will take complete charge of the house, children and responsibility in the parents’
absence e.g. if away on business. They will cook for the family and supervise/carry out household
chores, laundry, shopping etc
A Doula
A Doula is an experienced woman who offers emotional and practical support to a woman (or
couple) before, during and after childbirth. A doula believes in “mothering the mother” - enabling a
woman to have the most satisfying and empowered time that she can during pregnancy, birth and
the early days as a new mum. This type of support also helps the whole family to relax and enjoy
the experience. A Doula will typically spend 6 to 8 weeks spanning both pre and post natal periods.
A Maternity Nurse
A Maternity Nurse helps new mums in all aspects of caring for the newborn and can assist mum with
establishing a routine and with breast or bottle feeding, bathing, settling baby to sleep. The
Maternity Nurse is there to give the Mum support during those first few weeks after childbirth and is
on duty 24 hours a day six days a week. For those mothers who don't have family support near to
hand and have had their first child or who have had twins or a caesarean, hiring a maternity nurse
can save your sanity and support you through those first few physically and mentally exhausting
weeks. A professional maternity nurse should have suitable experience and qualifications for her
role. Most maternity nurses are very experienced Nannies, ex mid-wifes or paediatric nurses who
have had experience of working within a private family environment. They must be sufficiently
mature and have a relevant qualification such as Maternity Practitioner Award (MNT). Maternity
Nurses are self-employed and can earn anything from £500 per week, when training, to over £600
per week when fully qualified (or more for Twins).
Babysitting Service
Cupcakes can also provide a babysitter – either for individual sittings or a more regular arrangement.
